SNAAK - Back From The Grave
Second attempt with Gamemaker. Lots of my own GML stuff and I made all the sound and "music" myself. Important learning steps and just empowering to have done every part myself.
Three things I like:
Again, all of these assets were made by me! Learned how to animate sprites, made a lot more art in general like backgrounds and such, did everything in GML, and even got some music software up and running (er, sort of).
- The snake head slithers nicely, and the zombie snakes wiggle menacingly. The background is a little off but there is some sense of theme here.
- It's actually kind of fun! Very arcade-y and trying to better your score can be really engrossing, I think the being chased feeling works.
Three things I don't like:
Yeah. The music is pretty basic and falls apart after about 15 seconds. It's pretty darn scrappy and is really just some live takes with arpeggiated synths. Looking forward to figuring out this stuff more but right now it's just about good enough at capturing the mood I was going for.
- The gameplay is a little too simple. I haven't play tested this too widely but I'm sure there are some strategies that make it too easy or too boring or both.
- It's kind of hard to explain the intricacies of the game well. I tried putting a lot more on the instructions screen but play testing brought out that that was too confusing. I'm all in favor of discovering game features but this can be a little opaque for newcomers.
