Proteus is a game about exploration, mystery, and the simple pleasure of walking around a beautiful natural landscape.

For me, Proteus has been enormously eye-opening about what a game should try to do and what a game can be. More than this, though, is the sheer joy of being inside its world, especially with the wonderful sound design that turns each sight, each tree, each animal into a small piece of the game's generative music. It may seem at first that there is no method of interaction with the world besides the sound effects but there are definitely secrets to be found here and it's an experience I've come back to many times.
Oh, hell. Here's a live-action trailer which captures the idea well. It's just a bloody pleasant walk through a weird little world.
Reasons You Might Not Like This
Like with many of the games I feature on here, there isn't a whole lot of traditional "video game" game here to grasp on to. There is indeed player interaction but I'd struggle to say that there are what people traditionally call game mechanics. For me, that's great, but if you need deep systems or any kind of skill or mastery, then this isn't the game for you.
