Recommendation: Kentucky Route Zero
Windows | Mac | Linux
I can't wait till the final three chapters are released (hopefully soon), Kentucky Route Zero is just too good not to recommend. I've just learned that the authors wrote the entire game out in Twine (an Interactive Fiction editor) before producing the full multimedia version of the game and it's not too surprising. Kentucky Route Zero features fantastic writing and innovates by playing with how a player experiences the narrative and shapes it around their choices, something more commonly found in Interactive Fiction than in video games. But that is not to discount the full KR0 experience at all, the artwork is fresh and new and the music and sound design is exceptional. You're not going to find anything else out there like this, whether in tone or in art or in narrative. If you balk at the $25 price tag for an unfinished game, there are also two free side-excursions from the same developers that will give you the flavor of KR0, if not the best show pieces and main narrative.
Reasons You Might Like This
A magical realist exploration of Americana in the weirdest way possible. Great music, art, and writing unlike anything else you've experienced in video games.
Reasons You Might Not Like This
It's narrative heavy. If the atmosphere doesn't pull you in, then the writing probably won't either. Not too many puzzles or "gameplay," mostly just a weird and wonderful world to explore.
